Discovering Your Purpose: Lessons from the Queen of Katwe

Have you ever wondered if you have a purpose in this world? Or maybe you know your purpose but feel stuck in seeing it activated? You’re not alone. Many of us struggle with these questions. But what if I told you that God had already planned good things for you to do long before you even took your first breath?

In our recent sermon series, "At the Movies," we explored the inspiring true story of Phiona Mutesi, the Queen of Katwe. Her journey from the slums of Uganda to becoming a chess champion is a powerful reminder that where you start does not determine where you end. Let’s dive into her story and discover how you, too, can find and activate your God-given purpose.

The Power of Purpose

Phiona Mutesi grew up in Katwe, one of the largest and poorest slums in Kampala, Uganda. Despite the harsh conditions, she discovered a gift that would change her life and the lives of many others—chess. Her story is a testament to the universal message of faith, purpose, and resilience.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” This verse reminds us that God has a unique purpose for each of us. Phiona’s journey shows that discovering and activating this purpose requires faith and resilience.

Overcoming Obstacles

Phiona’s path was not easy. She faced numerous challenges, from living in extreme poverty to being marginalized by her peers. Yet, she remained resilient. Her coach, Robert Katende, played a crucial role in her journey by speaking life into her and encouraging her to pursue her passion for chess.

Just like Phiona, you may have faced life-taking words or obstacles that make you doubt your purpose. But remember, God’s words are life-giving. Surround yourself with a community that speaks life into you and reminds you that you are made on purpose for a purpose.

Taking Action

So, how can you discover and activate your purpose? Here are some practical steps:

1. Seek God’s Guidance: Spend time in prayer and ask God to reveal His purpose for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

2. Explore Your Gifts: What are you passionate about? What skills or talents do you have? Phiona discovered her gift for chess by exploring and committing to it. Your gifts can be a clue to your purpose.

3. Join a Community: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support you. Join a church group or a community that helps you grow in your faith and purpose.

4. Take the Growth Track: If you’re part of our church, consider completing the Growth Track. It’s designed to help you discover your unique purpose and make a difference in the lives of others. And if you are not in our church or a church, find a community that will help you discover and activate your gifts so that YOU CAN LIVE A LIFE OF PURPOSE!
